A revolution in copy cataloging busy work

I had absolutely no idea OpenRefine was a thing, or perhaps I did and had completely forgotten about it. Regardless, while I was reading Adventures in Metadata Hygeine I became somewhat excited about the possibility of using that to clean up my library’s subject headings. It is something that I have done in the past around Christmas when our department is operating with a skeleton crew and I don’t have much to do. The task is not one to engender much fanfare or elation, but it sure beats the hell out of doing subject searches for misspellings of “fiction”. Not sure how easy it is to extract the MARC 21 records from our ILS but I am definitely going to mention this to our catalogers! If this bears any fruit for us and if they feel compelled to take action, I hope I am rewarded for bringing them this knowledge by them pawning off the tedious work on someone else. *Fingers crossed*
